Layered Desserts- Staples of Church Socials!

Ten or so years ago, layered desserts of pudding, Cool Whip, and Jell-O in various combinations were all the rage.  I’ve selected the cream (or Cool Whip) of the crop.  Most of these came from the recipe book of the church I grew up in.

1st Layer

1 c plain flour

1 stick butter

1 c chopped nuts

 

1- Mix flour, butter, and nuts. 

2- Spread in the bottom of a 9” X 13” baking dish. 

3- Bake until brown.  Cool completely. 

 

2nd Layer

8 oz cream cheese, softened

½ of a large container of Cool Whip

1 c powdered sugar

 

1- Combine cream cheese, Cool Whip, and powdered sugar with mixer. 

2- Spread cream cheese mixture over crust.  

 

3rd & 4th Layers

2 small pkg of instant chocolate pudding

3 c milk

½ large container of Cool Whip

½ c chopped nuts, toasted

 

1-Mix milk and pudding. 

2- Spread pudding over 2nd layer. 

3- Top with remaining Cool Whip. 

4- Sprinkle with toasted nuts. 

5- Chill for several hours.

Dirt Cake

 

1 stick butter

8 oz cream cheese, softened

1 c powdered sugar

3 ½ c milk

2 (4 oz) pkgs instant vanilla pudding

8 oz container Cool Whip

20 oz pkg Oreo cookies, crushed

 

1- Combine butter, cream cheese, and powdered sugar with electric mixer.  Set aside. 

2- In another bowl, combine pudding mix and milk. 

3- Add Cool Whip to pudding mixture.  Stir to combine. 

4- In a large dish, alternate layers of crushed Oreos and pudding mixture.  Be sure to begin and end with crushed cookies. 

5- Refrigerate 2 hours before serving.

Strawberry Pretzel Dessert

 

 

8 oz pretzels, crushed

¾ butter, melted

1 c plus 3 Tbsp sugar, divided

8 oz cream cheese

8 oz Cool Whip

1 (20-oz) can crushed pineapple

2 (3-oz) pkgs strawberry Jell-O

2 (10-oz) pkgs frozen sweetened sliced strawberries, thawed

 

1- Coat 9” X 13” pan with non-stick spray. 

2- Combine crushed pretzels, melted butter, and 3 Tbsp of sugar.  Press into bottom of pan. 

3- Bake at 400º for 18 to 20 minutes, until set.  Remove from oven and set aside to cool. 

4- In a bowl, beat cream cheese and 1 c sugar until smooth.  Fold in Cool Whip. 

5- Spread Cool Whip Mixture over cooled crust, and refrigerate until chilled, several hours. 

6- Open pineapple and drain juice into measuring cup.  Add water to equal 1 cup.  Pour into saucepan and bring to a boil.  Pour into a large bowl. 

7- Stir gelatin into hot liquid until dissolved. 

8- Drain strawberry juice into a measuring cup.  Add water if necessary to equal 1 ½ cups.  Stir liquid into gelatin mixture. 

9- Refrigerate until partially set.  Add drained pineapples and strawberries. 

10-Carefully spoon fruit and gelatin mixture over Cool Whip mixture. 

11- Cover and refrigerate 3 to 4 hours until firm. 

 

Banana Split Pie

 

2 sticks butter

2 c graham cracker crumbs

1 ½ c powdered sugar

1 egg

1 large can crushed pineapple, drained

4 bananas

9 oz cool whip

1 c chopped pecans

 

1- Melt 1 stick butter.  Add graham cracker crumbs.  Work until damp.  Press in bottom of deep 8” X 8” pan, or use 9” X 13” pan or dish. 

2- Beat eggs.  Incorporate soften butter and sugar. 

3- Spread over graham cracker mixture. 

4- Top with bananas and pineapple. 

5- Spread cool whip on top. 

6- Top with pecans. 

7- Refrigerate few hours or overnight.

Thanks sunnyglitter. I'm lukewarm on the stuff with Cool Whip. It's not a great texture for me.
