Ever Considered Moving to Canada?

Have you ever thought about moving to Canada?  Well, plenty of people do!  Nearly half of Canadians were born elsewhere.  So why do so many people flock to Canada?  Obviously there are many reasons, but how’s this for a great reason for moving to Canada:  According to the United Nations Human Development Index, Canada has the highest quality of life in the world.

I read many interesting facts about Canada, and viewed many beautiful pictures when I was preparing the Canadian History and Culture HubMob roundup hub.  This notion that many people choose to move to Canada intrigued me.  For me personally, I must admit I might be deterred by the amount of time that it is cold with snow on the ground.  On the other hand, many of the things that I was reading about Canada and Canadian culture made me think, “There are a lot of good reasons for moving to Canada!”  So here goes with some of the things I found appealing about Canada.

Reasons for Moving to Canada- The People

Despite historically strained relations between English- and French-speaking Canadians, in general Canadians are renowned for their friendly and easy going manner.

The life expectancy for Canadians is the 8th highest in the world, with the average Canadian life expectancy 81.2 years old.  The U.S. life expectancy is 46th at 78.1.

Canada has the highest enrollment in education beyond high school in the world.

Like a few less people with your people?  Well how’s this for a good reason for moving to Canada:  Canada is the 9th most sparsely populated country in the world, with less than 9 people per square mile, or 3 people per square kilometer.

Reasons for Moving to Canada- The Land and Nature

Like the idea of communing with nature? Half of Canada’s land mass is forested, which ranks Canada tenth in the world for forests. Canada is known for its many lakes, and is home to nine percent of the earth’s “renewable” water.

Canada has a rainforest, a small desert, a “Grand Canyon”, ancient Indian ruins, and prehistoric marine fossils.

Did you think Niagara Falls was in N.Y.? Guess what? There’s a Canadian side, in Ontario. Canada has ten spectacularly high waterfalls, the highest of which is Delta Falls in British Columbia.

Canada has the most working lighthouses in the world. The Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Canada are excellent for whale sightings.

Icewine from Inniskillin Ontario

Reasons for Moving to Canada- Products

When I was living in Germany, I discovered Icewine, a delightfully sweet dessert wine, for which the grapes are harvested at the first frost.  Well guess what?  Canada is the largest producer of Icewine in the world!

Canada is one of the world’s major producers of cheese, and Canadians are major consumers as well.  Canadians consume more macaroni and cheese than any other nation.  My kind of people.

Amusement Park at West Edmonton Mall

Winnie the Pooh’s Canadian Heritage

Canadian Singer Songwriter Neil Young Helpless

Famous Canadians and Canada’s Other Claims to Fame

I’m not a Winter sports person myself, but Vancouver, British Columbia hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics.  Safe to say, Canada is a fantastic place to enjoy Winter sports.  You go ahead.  I’ll drink cocoa and read a good book by the fire.

The West Edmonton Mall in Alberta is the fifth largest shopping mall in the world.  Within is the largest indoor amusement park in the world.

It is widely believed that Santa Clause is from Canada.

A small black bear from Canada named Winnipeg was donated to the London Zoo in 1910.  “Winnie” became a favorite of Christopher Robin Milne, whose father later wrote stories for him about “Winnie the Pooh”.

One of my absolute favorite singer-songwriters, Neil Young was born in Canada, and started his career there.  I wonder if Neil performs often in Canada… That would be a good reason for me for moving to Canada.

Canadians are quite musically inclined.  Follow the links to check out Canadian bands and Canadian singers and musicians

Canada is also home to many actors and actresses, as well as movie directors.  Keifer Sutherland, Mike Meyers, Kim Catrall, Pamela Anderson, and James Cameron, to name a few.  Check out the links, and prettydarkhorse’s hubs on Canadian Actors, and Canadian Actresses

I love Canada. I live in England but I am lucky enough to have been there twice, both times because I was, at the time, working for a Canadian specialist tour operator. It was a long time ago but it is the magnificent scenery that sticks in my mind. Coming from a tiny country in comparison, I remember the feeling of huge insignificance when faced with enormous mountains and the vastness of space. Apparently, according to my old boss, you can fit England into one of Canada's lakes and I am sure that it true.

I did not have a choice which areas I visited - the first trip was to Quebec and the second to Nova Scotia. Even though I really wanted to go to the Rockies, I loved both trips. The first was a skiiing trip - it was great fun and the slopes were very beautiful. Nova Scotia was peaceful and stunning - we tried canoeing in the Kejimikujik National Park and saw moose by the sides of the road - I remember parking the car and going after them, trying to get a good photo.

Canada was definitely very clean; probably the cleanest place I have been. I remember it as friendly, too, and very unpopulated compared to England. Driving was so much easier and much more enjoyable! I would love to go back with my husband and children one day. Thanks for a great read.

All of the above is true, but the trump card for me is that it gets too cold in the winter. That's the reason I left Michigan. I guess I'll stay in North Carolina.

On a serious note, I don't like the way Canadians treated Ann Coulter when she was prevented from speaking on a college campus. They went way beyond free speech. There appears to be NO tolerance for political conservatives or their ideas.

Terrific hub! Mac and cheese, my kind of people, too! And where I live is about an hour and a half from Niagara Falls, both the American and Canadian side. We all like the Canadian side better, for some cogent reasons having to do with how CLEAN they keep the public areas!

Interesting hub. While Canada is very beautiful as shown by the pictures, and it's less populated I think I'll stick with the good old US of A! We enjoy more freedom than they do up north. Well, at least for now! Our government seems to be on a mission to take away many of those freedoms and control every industry in one way or another. Anyway, sorry I'll stop with the politics :)

The cold deters me too Diamond. I grew up in S.C., and would not want to go back to spending summers there. Too humid. Wouldn’t it be great to “summer” in Canada?

It would be a very difficult thing for me to give up my American citizenship—I'm a staunch patriot. But certainly Canada is a country of interest. Although I agree with you about the colder weather. My plan is actually to head back south eventually and that would rule Canada out in any event.

Excellent hub. I look forward to reading on about Canada.

Great reasons to move to Canada. After living for 24 years in US, my best friend moved to Canada and according to her it was the first time she could breathe since she immigrated to North America.

From my experience, Canada offeres the best of the two worlds; it has the efficiency of US and the charm and grace of Europe. If i am to start my life over again (after 30 years in US) I will consider returning to Europe though since Canada's weather is way to cold for me

Petra the cold weather is absolutely the biggest deterant for me too.

You had me with a possible move until I read about the cold weather...I'm not a fan of the cold, I prefer Florida's heat. Great hub, I'm going to share this with my Canadian friends!
