San Antonio Burgers- Original San Antonio Hamburger Joints

75

By rmcrayne

Who doesn’t love a great burger?! There was a time when I hardly ever ate hamburgers. I liked them, but throughout my Air Force career, I avoided fast food as much as possible, and rarely ate burgers at restaurants. That seems to have changed. Maybe my step-brother, Devon (we call each other Vern) and his mom, Marie are bad influences! They are burger enthusiasts.

This is a listing of “burgers joints” in San Antonio, Texas. Six burger restaurants are one of a kind, unique to San Antonio. The other has four restaurants, all in San Antonio.

Texas Hamburger Company

The Texas Hamburger Company is one of my brother Vern’s finds.  They opened in 1989 and are located close to where he works.  Their basic burger starts at $4.59, with the double burger at $5.99.  You can have cheese, chili, guacamole, mushrooms, bacon, or green chilis on your burger.  Turkey burgers and Garden burgers are also available.

Sides include fries, tater tots, and onion rings.  They also have other offerings like chicken fried steak, chicken fingers, and grilled chicken platters.

We recently tried the Chili Cheeseburger, Bacon Cheeseburger, and Guacamole Burger.  They were excellent, as were the hand cut fries and thick cut onion rings.  I figured the mild taste of guacamole would be lost in the burger, but it wasn’t.  The taste of the guacamole definitely came through.  The biggest taste was the bacon on the Bacon Cheeseburger.  I’ve had burgers where the bacon taste is lost, but not with this burger.

The Texas Hamburger Company building provides a really nice atmosphere.  The loft would be a great place for office parties, going away parties, birthdays, or even Christmas parties.

Shout out to the guys behind the counter at the Texas Hamburger Company who helped us get our pictures, then packaged it all up for takeout.

The Lord's Kitchen (at 3:20 into Video)

The Lord’s Kitchen

The Lord’s Kitchen is another one of my brother’s discoveries. He was introduced to this family-owned business by co-workers. They went here for lunch occasionally. I can’t imagine going back to work after one of these burgers. If you look closely, there is a quarter pound burger and a junior burger on the menu, but most of the burgers start at a half a pound. They are famous for their 1 pound, 1 ½ pound, 2 pound, and 3 pound burgers!

Many would describe this one-of-a-kind San Antonio gem as a “hole in the wall”. There are about 12 to 15 tables inside. The Lord’s Kitchen has been serving up burgers since 1994. They promise fresh sirloin ground daily and fresh produce. They are open for lunch only on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with extended hours on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. They close on Sundays.

¼ lb burger $4.75, ½ lb burger $5.25, 1 lb Lord’s Burger (double meat w/ cheese) $8.99, 1 ½ lb Get Down Burger (triple meat w/ cheese), ½ lb Ghetto Burger (chili, cheese), fries $1.50 & $2.75, onion rings $2.00 & $3.75. Bacon $1.00. Specialty burgers feature ingredients like jalapeno peppers, barbecue sauce, and salsa. Visit their website for current menu and prices.

We went here when my dad and Marie were visiting. They got high marks from burger connoisseur Marie. My sister and I split a half pound chili cheeseburger. Marie may have been the only one in our party to finish off a half pounder. If you finish off the 1 ½ pound Get Down Burger, I think you get your picture on the wall.

The Lord’s Kitchen is located at 118 Sequin St, San Antonio, TX 78208.

Live Music at Luther's Cafe San Antonio

Luther’s Café

Luther’s Café is located in downtown San Antonio at 1425 Main Street.  My sister frequents Luther’s with her friend Jan.  Lucky for me Christy is not a big eater, and usually brings up to a half a burger back to me.

Luther’s has been around since 1949, and still forms burgers by hand.  Their original half pound burger is a bargain at $4.95.  If you’re a big burger fan, try their 1 pound burger for $7.20.  Add cheese for $1, chili or bacon $1.25, fries & shake $4.25.  They also offer a turkey burger and a 3-bean veggie burger.  Specialty burgers offer ingredients like poblano peppers, jalapeno peppers, and inferno wing sauce.  Check their website for more details and current prices.

Chili Cheeseburger- my favorite!

Chester’s Hamburgers

Chester’s is another one of Vern’s finds.  There are four San Antonio locations.  These 1/3 pound burgers start at $4.99 for the basic hamburger, $6.29 for the double, $5.49 for the cheeseburger, and $7.29 for the double cheeseburger.  The fries are fresh cut, and the onion rings are super crispy.  Chester’s offers a stunning 200 kinds of beer and wine.  They have a sports bar vibe.

First time I tried Chester’s, Vern brought home a chili cheese burger and a bacon cheese burger.  These are some serious burgers!  My favorite Chili Cheeseburger may very well be from Chester’s.

Shout out to the staff at the IH-10 West location for letting us get our photos and then packing us up for takeout.  No website, but you can reach the IH-10 location at 210-699-1222.

With tons of mouthwatering, original pictures of both food and atmosphere, conveniently placed maps, and notes on history, pricing, and other features of note, and even links to additional locations if one wants to keep on looking, I've got to say that this hub is going to be an EXCELLENT guide to anyone looking for local burger joints. How great!

Rose Mary - Once again you caused me tremendous hunger pains. Your's is a fun article with really fine photos. I almost hate to hit back at you here, but you brought pangs and pains to my middle, so you deserve a swat or two yourself - I was thinking of the really famous Earl Abel's restaurant on Broadway at Hildebrand, opposite Incarnate Word University. In addition to the many types of hamburgers they offered, they provided us with the world's very best black-bottom pie. In fact, those who were smart enough skipped the hamburgers and had two pieces of B-B pie instead! Too bad taht now Earl Abel's is closed for good and all.

DiamondRN, I'm always a sucker for the Chili Cheeseburger. Have to say the hamburger with fried egg at Red Robin and at The Cove has my interest though.

Gus, Earl Abel's is still around! OK, not quite the same. I have been to Earl's when they were on Broadway. That building was demolished in 2006 and there is now a high rise apartment building on the site. They have a new owner and are located in a strip mall on the Austin Highway, between Harry Wurzbach and New Braunfels Ave. I've been to the new site 2 or 3 times, and I was amongst the youngsters there. The clientele is definitely the senior crowd. A lot of the decor is the same. According to the website, a lot of the employees are the same. AND the black bottom pie is still on the menu, which I will definitely try next time!

Thanks oceansnsunsets! Have the burger! No problem with the occasional burger, which is what I can return to now that this hub is written!

Rose Mary - Thanks for telling me that Earl Abel's Restaurant is still alive. As for its "decor,"

I remember the ditty on the wall in front of the "sit and eat" counter - "Sajo, dare dago. Twennybus inarow." "Nosam, demmis trux. Summit cowsin. Summit dux."

Hard to figure out what that says unless you actually say it out loud.

Thanks for the info. Enjoy September. Cool days are on the way. AND I truly do hope that the black bottom pie is truly as good as it was back in the 50's.

I'm a huge fan of San Antonio. It is among the most charming of cities, and I grew up not far away (about 85 miles).

I will have to try some of these burger joints the next time we are in San Antone. Seems like every time I'm in the city, my brother always wants to get Chinese food.

Great Hub! I love Texas and one of the reasons is all of the great unique places to eat. We have passed through San Antonio a few times but never at the right time to grab a bite. I will know next time where to go!

I lived in San Antonio a looonnnnnggg time ago as a kid, would love to see it again. We used to get burgers at a place called Frontier if I remember correctly. They were great, but these sound like wonderful burgers to me. Great Hub and I will read some more of yours as well.
