Small Business Ideas- Cultivate Profit Centers to Make a Living Without a Job
86Tired of answering to others? Want to be your own boss? Consider developing small business ideas. About a year ago I took two classes with Barbara J. Winter through my local Community Education program. One of the classes was titled Making a Living Without a Job. Barbara’s model of success is based on establishing multiple profit centers, what most of us would consider to be multiple small business ideas. Barbara had great advice and resources to offer. This hub is a summary of some of the things Barbara presented.
Barbara Winter is the author of the successful book, Making a Living Without a Job: Winning Ways for Creating Work That You Love. Barbara maintains a website and her blog, Buon Viaggio. Barbara publishes a print newsletter, Winning Ways, and writes for sites such as eZineArticles.com. You can find Barbara on Twitter and Facebook. She is active around the country giving presentations such as the one I attended. She also does webinars.
Barbara recommends finding your passions, being a goal-setter, and focusing on rewards. (Another hub, another day.) She clusters small business ideas, or profit centers into 6 primary groupings: Service, Information Packaging, Seasonal, Landlord, Mail Order, and Products. She personally aims for 10 profit centers, with a goal of $10K per year minimum earning potential each. Her profit centers change over time with her personal interests and motivation, and with earning potential trends. Of course she didn’t start with 10 profit centers, and neither should we!
SERVICE PROFIT CENTERS
The first grouping of small business ideas is the Service Profit Center. There are two primary types of service.
First there are services that people don’t like to do, and will therefore pay you to do. Services may not require much, if any specialized skills. Such services could include housecleaning, yard work, pool cleaning, painting, and washing the exterior of houses. There is an array of pet services people pay for: grooming, walking, playing and poop scooping.
The second grouping under the Service Profit Center is expert skills. These are specialized skills that others will pay for you to do. This would include trades like plumbing, electricity, and carpentry. Expert services could include teaching a musical instrument, teaching voice, or teaching art. Expert services can overlap with the next category, the Information Management Profit Center. Many motivational speakers and expert consultants fall under both categories.
You can advertize free on Craigslist, or use other web tools and print ads to bring attention to your service.
INFORMATION MANAGEMENT PROFIT CENTERS
The second major grouping of small business ideas is the Information Management Profit Center. This grouping of income options is perfect for people who are passionate about communicating, whether it be through writing or public speaking, or both. This would include most hubbers! Maybe you have a subject, or multiple subject areas you are passionate and knowledgeable about, or maybe you love researching new things. Either way, there is a plethora of options for you in the Information Management Profit Center grouping of small business ideas.
Not only could you work from home with information packaging, you could work from almost anywhere on the planet! Write articles for print or online sites, develop a website, write a blog, speak to any group that will have you. Sell yourself!
For me, I have a tremendous ‘word of mouth’ reputation in the Air Force as an ergonomics expert, and am now working on establishing a reputation outside of the AF. See my hub on Barbara’s lecture, Establishing Yourself as an Expert.
I have written an overview article on computer workstation ergonomics on HubPages. I am deciding whether to write a series of articles on my key points on HubPages, or whether to post my primary work on my own website. I have just started teaching a computer workstation ergonomics class through the San Antonio community education program. And this is just the beginning!
I could write additional articles on ergonomics for a variety of writing sites. I could develop a more formalized presentation for other professionals. I could post short videos on YouTube, or sell DVDs of my presentation. I could do webcasts. I could write a book or an eBook. For me, ultimately I would like to do onsite consulting in computer workstation ergonomics in office settings.
SEASONAL PROFIT CENTERS
The third profit center is Seasonal products and services. This would include products that are specific to holidays for example. The idea would be to make a lot of money in a short period of time, and can be good for writers. Depending on your total package of profit centers, you may decide to have multiple seasonal profit centers.
There are fireworks stands in San Antonio that are huge and clustered throughout the city. They only sell fireworks around New Years and 4th of July! A local handyman and repair service advertizes they will put up your outdoor Christmas lights. A lawn service advertizes power washing houses and sidewalks during their off season.
Growing up in S.C., there was a family business that prepared and sold huge quantities of pork barbeque a couple times of year, like Memorial Day and 4th of July. A lot of communities have small business enterprises that smoke turkeys at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Another seasonal business is selling Christmas trees.
Maybe you’re an artsy craftsy person. You could make items for Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day or other holidays. Maybe you could sell handmade or novelty items suitable for Christmas presents. These items could be sold at craft fairs, church bazaars, or similar venues. A friend’s brother-in-law sells his handmade woodcrafted items at a monthly craftsman’s show near Dallas. In Texas, we call these “Market Days”. Some months he does not make much in sales, but picks up orders for custom items that make his time worthwhile.
LANDLORD PROFIT CENTERS
The most well known landlord scenario is owning a house or other real estate and renting it out. There are other ways however for property to support us. Think a little more broadly, of renting out something you own to other people. Some of these situations are seasonal. Have you ever rented a costume for Halloween? Maybe you’re not into cooking, but perhaps you could rent linens, serving pieces and decorations for people catering their own parties. This kind of profit center could start small. Perhaps you buy these things for an anniversary party, or retirement party. You could rent them out to friends and ‘friends of friends’ by word of mouth.
Are you handy with small appliance repairs? Perhaps you could buy broken carpet cleaners, or sewing machines, or snow blowers inexpensively. You could fix them up and start a profit center renting them out. Advertize free on Craigslist. Barbara knew a business that rented mud turtles for a local annual event, featuring mud turtle races.

One of the oldest small business ideas is the Mail Order business. This profit center is now much easier, and a more attractive option, thanks to options like eBay, Amazon and Etsy. Depending on the product you choose to sale, you could operate your mail order business from most anywhere. Maybe you want to summer in Maine and winter in Florida!
Many industrious entrepreneurs have made a science of finding products to sell on eBay at handsome profits. Just do a search right here on HubPages! Some items may not be appealing to buyers in your country, but may be wildly popular to international customers.
There are two examples of monks who sell products directly through mail order. The Laser Monks sell printer ink cartridges. The Trappist Monks of Ava, Missouri sell delicious fruitcakes.
Maybe you can turn your handcrafted items into a Mail Order Profit Center. I have stumbled on a number of products like soaps and microwavable neck packs, often made and sold by stay-at-home moms as a home-based business. Use established sites such as Etsy, as well as your own websites and blogs to promote your products. My sister has an Etsy store to sell her custom cut and hand painted wood crosses. I have an Etsy store to sell my patriotic flag-inspired mosaic designs.

The Ebay Marketplace is a fantastic resource to find rare and unique collectables and antiques at unbelievable prices, there are rare coins, paper money and stamps, there are paintings by some of the famous...
PRODUCTS PROFIT CENTERS
Market a product you are enthusiastic about. Barbara says only sell a product that you’d be the first customer for. There are many companies that have been around a long time, and depend on “regular people” to market and sell their products. Most everyone has heard of Amway, Avon, Tupperware, Pampered Chef and Mary Kay. You could also invent, develop or make something.

Lots of stuff here. I will check out the website.
Very, very interesting. This hub is so full of informations that I have to bookmark it, rated it obviously up and stumbled too. Marvellous. :)
Good Information!!!!!!!
Here Barbara's suggestion is quite appealing. Barbara’s model of success is based on establishing multiple profit centers, what most of us would consider to be multiple small business ideas. The hub is full of information. Thanks for sharing.
It's nice article. I like most your opinion, and I will lear more later. Thank you.
its a fantastic hub , gives me motivation to carry on with my pursuits !
Great hub, what a good read. Thanks for taking the time to share this information with us
it was grate viewing the hub and hope to gain alot from that. Ronnie
Very interesting. Definitely got me thinking about more ways to diversify my income. Thanks!
hmmm interestng hub also read my article of secrets of making money
You have given energy back to us the people who don't want to work corporate all our lives, thanks...great hub :)
Thanks for the good advice!
Interesting insight, thank you for sharing! That gives a whole new perspective on how you can structure your business ideas to protect against the ups and downs in any one area.
So many great ideas. Thanks for sharing. There is so much a person can do when they truly want to.
Excellent job on your hub! you have excellent advice on often overlooked opportunities! The best advice I ever got (besides yours) was from my grandpa who said to do what you love (what you have a passion for), find a niche that nobody else wants to do (example = poop scooper), and to not be a slave to anyone - be your own boss when you can and Go for it! In this economy and economic downturn you are an inspiration!
Thank you! http://MischelleWatkins.com
so many great idea, there is so many things they truly want to a person can do when truly want.
thanks you for sharing the information
A lot of great ideas put togheter... thank you for sharing this
Great food for thought. There are many ways to earn a living out there. The key is to find and need and to fill it. It is very empowering to be self-employed.
Thank you for the informaiton.
Great essays here term paper
Thanks for the blog- especially in this economy, people need all the ideas they can gather. What kind of "home based" businesses do you currently have? Are you making a living at it?
Bob
Wow! I am really impressed with this blog. There is alot going on but its broken down into clear chunks with alot of pics which make it interesting and are icons for each of the profit centers.
I'm learning about the art of blogging and can see alot here. You showcase an expert other than yourself, give concrete "how to" info as well as make it a story fun to read.
Eventhough you are sharing information you gained from Barbara Winter's class, you have added value to it in how you've packaged this article.
That term "profit center" is cool because it sounds like a scavenger hunt that anyone can join and search out where the market for it coincides. This approach makes business more attractive for the newly poor person who is dealing with this economy and looking for alternatives.
In regard to selling a product that you love, I wish to share something from my experience. Balance your passion with rational research to discover if people have made money off it. Learn from them directly how to promote it because you'll have to learn how to find people like you, who love it too, as well as what to say and do once you find them.
The way you are paid to promote something is just as important as how cool it is to you. Would you rather need 10,000 customers to make $10,000/mo. or 350? Don't be afraid to find someone who is in business that you trust to look at your plan. Look for ideas you haven't considered. You will have to develop a tough skin and take their views with a grain of salt but value good mentors too.
This is a great hub! I'm going to check out the Etsy site. Thanks!
What a great hub! We have a choice to work for the man (or woman of course!) or be the man and be able to retire before we are too old to enjoy it. Best of luck to all of us!
Lots of Great information here. Barbara has great ideas. More people will be taking this route as the recession continues.
Nice! Dudes!
Interesting hub indeed! Thanks
It's always nice to see posts about small business ideas and hubs that serve to generate ideas and encourage others. Your hub is no exception.
Great job, keep it up!
I didn't realize I have done a great number of the ideas you present here. How are you able to focus enough to make any given project successful?
================
My goodness the value doesn't stop in the hub, it continues into the comments! Thanks for clearly outlining great information. It makes so much sense to have multiple streams of income (as I've read many times before) but never thought of it as having profit centers.
Great Stuff mate. Cheers
joblessness is getting to me.
Lots of great informatiion. Thank you.
Great hub, great practical tips - just what I've been looking for, thanks,
Nice Hub, great topic.
I was facinated by the multiple sources of job and pofitable enterprises your lest. I am retired so my interest is mostly academic, but I am still interested in what is going on in the world. Thanks for enlightening me.
wow.it is really very good and i like it very much.
Great information, and it came at a perfect time as many people are probably looking for ways to make some extra money.
Hey Great stuff. I'll check out more of your hubs. Bravo!
The most difficult aspect of working for yourself is not the work... it's maintaining all the paperwork to comply with Government Laws/Taxes/Regulations. These people don't ever teach that.
Great hub. I was suprised to see that I already do some of those things!
That's really good info, thanks for sharing.
Great advice,That tells us to never give up.
Sharon Smith
Great hub with some great advice, thank you very much!!!
Great advices! Thanks
Great Hub, lots of good information. I'm going to have to establish a few new revenue streams. Thanks.
Creating a website is the financing alike to setting up an ad on Television or Newsprint. And, your financing is just valuable if your site reaches your future's destinations. Our website designing enterprise makes advanced way out, that take you ahead and we prepare verified schemes that change the results into deals mirrored in our numerous joint ventures i.e Web Designing, Making Logo, Corporate Identity, Print Media, S.E.O, Web Development etc.
Really great info. We do live in a world where being your own boss is more possible than ever before... it is exciting! Thanks!
Great Hub!
Crisp and clear suggestions.
The ideas are all around us all the time, it's picking them up and putting them into practice that is tough. Best way out is to get started first!
Thank you for ideas
The suggestion pointed out by Barbara is useful. Real State and other option as discussed in the hub, give lot of good ideas. I had already selected one of them and going to implement it. Thanks for sharing so nice information.
I certainly find this information useful. Thank you for creating this hub.
Great Hub! I own a business, and the goal to have several successful profit centers in my business parallels your philosophy. I enjoyed reading your hub.
Lots of good advice! Thanks for that! A few things to take on board
Great Hub
You are right on, Sista! You've got to diversify if you're going to be able to make it through the tough spots.
We call it multiple streams of cash - but it's the same thing. I coach my clients that the cash streams should all be related.
For example - if you are a motivational speaker -- great. That's the service part. Then you package some of your speeches into ebooks, or videos. That's the Information Product part. Then you figure out how to distribute them. Then you offer a coaching program. It's ALL built around your main theme of motivational speaking and its a great, sustainable business model.
Good site -- I'll be following.
I absolutely agree with HeyJude (I like this great song of the "Beatles").It is not wise decision to put all eggs into one basket. It dilutes the results.
Some really great ideas you have.
Certainly some nice ways, thanks for sharing
I'm a big fan of Barbara Winters. I had the first edition of her book Making Money Without A Job. (The poor thing fell apart). Another author I like is Jennifer Bayse Sanders author of The Weekend Entrepreneur. And, yes, I have both editions of HER book too.
One thing I liked about your article is the ideas to get the old brain working on the question: "How can I make some extra money?"
Thank you for introducing me to this concept!
fantastic, informative hub, rosemary. this page can help direct people in many directions. 'they' always say, 'find your passion and it will work for you'. something I see often here in florida are roadside bbq vendors. they have a portable smoke bbq and sell freshly cooked food with the trimmings for reasonable prices. and they get you with the smell as you're driving by! just wanted to add, great ideas need equal great marketing strategies.
Very interesting hub design, most of mine do not have this much information as I have been breaking them into separate hubs. I will try this method and see if I can get a hub ranked as high as this.
Thanks for sharing
This hub is fantastic. Great ideas for small business. It helped get my mind thinking of what I can do. Thanks so much!!!
I have been unemployed since june of 09.I just joined hubpages 5 wks. ago,and just starting out.Your hub info has given me some ideas that I may be able to use to generate more income,it is a worthwhile read.Thank you for the info.
Thanks for this Hub! You put a lot of work into this and I appreciate your efforts - it got my creative juices going again! It's amazing - and certainly putting services on Craigslist or Kijiji or other free classified sites would be an easy and inexpensive way to start -
Thanks for this Hub!
Great Hub. Quite a bit of helpful information. Love the links to your other hubs. Keep up the good work!
Man I love this hub. I'm always looking for ways to make a living without a job LOL
Lots of great ideas here. I really like the way you think about business. I had 30 years of successful business with one apparently lousy idea!
welcome to my hub
Great hub...I have a dream of working on m own and living in Hawaii! (impossible is nothing!)
Thank you for your kindly share!
Nice hub. Some good information here. Thanks for the info..
Awesome hub! You've got a lot of good info here. THanks.
Very good information and advise. I have known most of what you mention on your Hub for a long time, but never really put my mind to it until now. Thanks.
Lost of great information and ideas.
Some really beneficial information in a down economy.
Excellent article! Thanks for introducing to these concepts. Its so true that people try putting all eggs in a basket and that too a basket they don't like :)
This idea of multiple revenue streams in multiple areas that mean something to you is so very true.
I am off to get the book and ofcourse follow you and go through all the links here :)
I love this! Thank you so much it's what I've been preaching to people around me for years! I'm writing a book about living an engaged life and this is one of the topics I have sort of in the book - loving what you do and living too! Will follow you!
I enjoyed this hub - it has great ideas that I hope I can try out. Multiple profit centers .. never thought of it the way you've written about it. Thanks.

Very informative hub that I should incorporate some concepts into my life/business

This is a great hub especially since I just read Barbara Winter's book. I would like to spread the word of creating your own job in my community because there are too many people standing around with no work and no prospects.
thank you for share.. give more idea for live
Multiple streams of income are especially nice to have in this economy. Great hub!
This is good information and an interesting topic to write on. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Great Hub, well done! I must say there are some real good ideas here! Competition is tough out there so if one isn't passionate about what you're doing it's going to be very difficult to sustain the enthusiasm and energy one needs to put in the hard work to get a business going and keep it going when times are tough. I've been closely involved with a small interactive 3D development training company for the past ten years. We've come very close to going bust during the past few months and it's a struggle to keep things going and keep paying salaries from month to month. Just hope we can make it through the next few months!
Great hub can use ideas to help my website get going alot of hits but no action at ShopShoesNMore.com
Some good ideas there, much better to have several businesses on the go than just one and be underemployed! I am looking to have several small businesses when I "retire" from working for others, better to have my eggs in more than one basket.
Lots of good information. I agree with finding several "profit centers". Especially theses days. We call in having several "Income Streams". Either way, good job!
I must say useful tips,
nice tips here, thanks for sharing,
Awesome hub! You have outlined just a few of many business opportunity choices for entrepreneurs to choose from. Some really good information to point us in the right direction. Good job!
I agree with all positive comments in relation to this hub. I will be following future hubs from the author. Well done!
this is excellent info, and I am definitely going to check out her site! Take care!
Hi, I love that you have touched on one of my favorite passions. In fact one of my biggest "failings" is that I get all excited about another great small business idea and move on past the last one that I had only just got standing on its own two feet.
No problem I have turned all that "job hopping" into a great training product of my own and have reached another happy place. I love small businesses.
