Top Ten Antioxident Vegetables and Fruits

By rmcrayne

Reader’s Digest posted a list of top 10 Fruits and 10 Vegetables that are the most antioxidant rich.  The foods were ranked by researchers at Tufts University Human Nutrition Research Center.

Antioxidants help neutralize the free radicals that can cause cell and tissue damage.  Tufts researchers note that free radicals resulting from cellular metabolism in the body, as well as lifestyle and environmental factors, are key in human aging.  People who have a high dietary intake of antioxidants vitamins and phytochemicals maintain physiologic function better, and have fewer degenerative diseases.

Here are the top ten fruits and vegetables, as determined by the researchers at Tufts:

Vegetables
1. Kale
2. Spinach
3. Brussels sprouts
4. Alfalfa sprouts
5. Broccoli flowers
6. Beets
7. Red bell peppers
8. Onions
9. Corn
10. Eggplant

Fruits
1. Prunes
2. Raisins
3. Blueberries
4. Blackberries
5. Strawberries
6. Raspberries
7. Plums
8. Oranges
9. Red grapes
10. Cherries

Not too keen on some of these fruits or vegetables?  Or maybe you’re just not sure what to do with some of them?  No worries.  I have provided links for you, for literally thousands of recipes.  For many of the top ten antioxidant vegetables and fruits, I have sited AllRecipes.com, RecipeZaar.com and MassRecipes.com.  These are huge sites, and often returned hundreds of recipes, to several thousand in some cases.  I have linked you to the main search.  These sites will allow you to do a search within the main search.  So no excuses!

Juicer Recipes for Vegetables and Fruits

Most experts recommend 5 servings a day of fruits and vegetables, but recently I have seen recommendations for 9 servings a day. That could be difficult for most of us. Juicing could be the answer for boosting out antioxidant fruit and vegetable consumption.

Excellent hub. I wrote one recently on the growing of usual vegetables in unusual colours. Often things like purple carrots, purple or orange cauliflowers etc are actually higher in antioxidants than 'normal' coloured ones. If you get a chance please take a read of it. I won't link to it here but you can easily find it under my profile if you fancy a bit of interesting info.
