Veggie Burgers Index and Overview to 32 Vegetarian Burger Recipes
By rmcrayne
I am sharing my research with you on options for vegetarian burgers. I spent quite a few hours reading and collecting recipes from the internet. I tried to ensure that these recipes are significantly different from each other, and not just a slight variation on the same theme.
I recently decided to strive for a more vegetarian diet, and reduce my consumption of animal protein. Increasingly doctors are recommending that meat eaters consider a 75% vegetarian diet. There are benefits, such as significantly decreased saturated fats, which may decrease cholesterol and triglycerides.
For me, I felt like I had more reflux symptoms when I combined animal protein and starches in the same meal. I heard American Idol Ruben Studdard proclaim that he is now a vegan and enjoys vegan versions of Soul Food and Southern comfort food. This started me looking for classics like vegetarian versions of hamburgers and meatloaf. If I could find vegetable and grain versions of these foods, I could eliminate my issues with food combining.
Sally Fallon on Soy
Ruben endorses Morning Star products. I have tried a few of these, but decided to minimize my use of these products because I’m not crazy about the idea of “texturized vegetable protein”, or TVP, nor am I convinced about the health benefits of soy in general. I have included a brief video of Sally Fallon of Nourishing Traditions on this topic. If you are interested in learning more, there is a series of three videos by Sally, about 10 minutes each, on YouTube. Just search “Sally Fallon” and “soy”.
Dr. Mercola on the Dangers of Soy
My search of veggie burger recipes is limited to burgers made with vegetables and grains, although I did include a few recipes that used tofu, a soybean product. Otherwise, I avoided soy products, and definitely no texturized vegetable protein.
My advice to you if you are a meat eater, is not to expect hamburger taste or texture. Just approach vegetarian burgers and patties as new and interesting options for meatless sandwiches. This being said, many of the recipes linked below specify frying 5 to 10 minutes per side to make the burgers crispy and firm. I think when I find the veggie burger with the most satisfying texture and taste, I will modify it as a meatloaf recipe.
I must admit I have not yet experimented much with determining the ‘just right’ amount of frying time to give veggie burgers a firm and crisp texture. Although I have personally chosen to avoid TVP, I have to concede that the texture is much more meat-like. If you are curious, there are multiple submissions for veggie burgers using Morningstar patties on AllRecipes.

The majority of the recipes below are from AllRecipes.com, which has a recipe calculator. This means if the recipe is for 12 or 15 burgers, and you only want to make 6, just plug 6 into the portions box, and it will calculate ingredient amounts.
I have listed most of the ingredients to each recipe, but not things like salt, pepper, water, or oil for frying patties. I have also not listed the ingredient amounts. I do not want to circumvent the originators of the recipes. Also I do not want a 10,000 word hub. I think the ingredients list will give you an idea of which vegetarian burger recipes you might want to try. Then just follow the links.
Likewise I have not provided step by step instructions for recipes. Some use canned beans or cooked grains, others start with dried beans and raw grains. For most recipes, ingredients, such as beans, rice, or vegetables, are prepared in a food processor. Most of the patties are pan fried until crisp and firm.

I have been curious about Portobello burgers for a while, and finally got around to trying these. They were ultra easy. My brother and I agreed they are our favorites of all the veggie burgers we have tried so far, including commercial brands from the grocer freezer, restaurant burgers, and several homemade veggie burgers we made. We used Hawaiian Bread buns which were soft and slightly sweet. See my photos to the right.

I developed a recipe which I shared in a hub, Vegan Friendly Veggie Burger- My Recipe of the Blue Plate Diner Classic. Form mixture into 8 to 10 patties and pan fry.

I appreciate this post and printed one to try. HOWEVER, as a vegetarian my experience is that its hard to find recipes for veg burgers that are tested adequately for texture and stick-togetherness when cooking. Except for the recipes such as porto or zukes grilled, veg patties are notorious for becoming a gloppy mess when trying to prepare them. I'd have like to have actual reviews I suppose to help me be more eager to try.
Though i am not a vegetarian i would definitely try this out in the near future.
Peace!!
Thanks Keith. My vegetarian hubs don't get much traffic, but I enjoy writing them. Stay tuned. I'm working on a Veggie Sandwich hub now that will have dozens of sandwich ideas.
Bookmarked. I need a quick reference alternative to meat burgers. My mouth is watering already.
Thanks for sharing. I have never tried a vegetarian burger before but tried the soya based vegetarian meat in the Chinese Restaurant. Didn't like it. Must give yours a try.
Thanks cordbailey. You should check out my most recent hub, which has recipes for burgers made with tuna or salmon:
Wow, quite an extensive list of recipes/options. Thank you, this makes it easier on me when it is my turn to cook as my wife is a Pescetarian!
Good idea MAJJHIMA. In the mean time, for those of us in the US, you can get any Red Robin burger with the vegetable patty.
Ashlea B I've tried #25, Italian Vegetable Patties, Blue Plate Diner #32, and Grilled Portabella with onions and avocado #22. Favorite is definitely #22 portabella burgers. I've had them multiple times.
Thanks for reading and commenting jeremytorres, atomflame, and Sun-Girl.
thanks rmcrayne. very good compilation of veggie burger recipes. you may consider opening a "vegie burger king" restaurant so that more people will be benefited and less animals get killed :)
Wonderful write up you actually shared in here which am sure will be very good for all vegetarians, thanks for sharing.
Looking to try some of these. Which of these have you personally tried out? Which would you recommend... do you have a favorite?
Good alternatives to beef burgers. Looks tasty.
Very excellent.
Thanks for visiting Taj. I just had the #22 Portobello burger again tonight! Very satisfying.
Hi rmcrayne. Thanks for sharing these recipes. It's nice to have a healthier alternative to the common burger meal.

Thanks PandoraDaisy. I linked to your hub as well.
Really great article. I LOVE these recipes...I've never seen them before & I'm definitely going to try them.
Lovely article for vegetarians which is actually making me to salivate.
Loved this article! So much information I might have to try these ideas out :) I linked you in a hub I wrote I hope it's ok! let me know if you want me to remove it.
Thanks for the visit StarCreate. I was sick recently and did not eat animal protein for about 10 days. I figured easier digestion. I am following you now and look forward to your recipes/hubs on vegetarian and living foods.
Mmm delicious-looking hub! I hope your experiment to eat more veggie food worked out well. I am planning more hubs on vegetarian barbequeing, there is so much you can do on a grill that doesn't involve meat! And doesn't have to involve soy either, the risks of which are only just now becoming appreciated I think...
Thanks so much MarieOaks. I really put a lot of time into this. It's nice to be appreciated.
Great job rmcrayne! What a nice collection of burger recipes.
Thanks so much chechetka. This hub was a lot of work, so it's nice you appreciated it.
Wow, what an excellent hub! Thanks for sharing all the recipes, I will definitely bookmark this page. Just reading it made my mouth water:) Great work, keep it up!
Karen have you tried suggesting folks start with just one vegetarian meal per week?
Outstanding hub! I am a dietitian and I am always trying to push veggie burgers. The problem is I live in the Midwest and well...people haven't quite caught on :)
Thanks for the praise cloudhardy.
Good Hub!!!!
The hub constructed on vegetarian burger is very much enjoyable and informative to go through.Photographs are awesome and videos attached are substantially informative. Thank for sharing and keep on hubbing.
Thanks for visiting smakram.
Great veggie burger ideas and pictures. Lots of ideas to try out, thanks!
Fossillady I've never been a milk drinker, but for cooking I like the almond milk. The rice milk seems really thin. I haven't tried the hemp milk yet.
Thanks for reading and commenting TeamSTM, REALfoodie, and living earth.
Reading your hub made me hungry.
Excellent hub! They all look delicious (I love veggie burgers). Thanks!
You're an angel. Thank you for the info from Dr. Mercola. Wow! Again, very helpful and informative on the subject of why we should avoid consuming most soy products. No more soymilk for me!
Veggie Burgers are my new favorite, in my opinion, they taste better then Beef Patties! I am sold, plus Veggie Burgers are much Better for You!!
Thanks for sharing this HubPage!!!
Thanks for visiting flinsura.
Thanks for sharing this! I love to eat vegetables and love to eat burgers as well, Love being Healthy .....
jshop, we don't have Trader Joe in San Antonio, but I'll look for Dr. Praeger's burgers next time I go to Whole Foods.
Thanks Sehnonimo. Let me know how those black bean burgers turn out.
Amie W you are right. This one took quite a while to put together. Glad you found Dr. Mercola enlightening. Watch out for (& avoid) TVP! Just say no to soy!
Wow, thanks so much for sharing on FaceBood techygran.
Thanks AliciaC. Hopefully more and more people are discovering that you don't have to be completely vegetarian. Just reducing animal protein can benefit health.
Thanks alertswiftreview. I hope you'll let me know how they turned out if you try some of them.
Wow! What a round-up! I'm a vegetarian and a HUGE veggie burger fan. Will definitely try some of the recipes you posted. Also, if you like a more veggie-patty-like burger, I highly reccomend Dr. Praeger's California Burgers. They carry them in Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and some grocery stores.
Awesome! I am so having one of these burgers sometime this week! Prolly the black bean burger. Thanks for the hub! Nice to see someone putting out vegetarian recipes! Bookmarked it, as well.
This must have taken a long time to write. Thanks for all the information, especially the Dr. Mercola video. I just bought some soy protein powder, and wow...now I'm thinking I shouldn't use it.
the breadth and variety of these recipes is great.. thank you. I shared this link on Facebook and had a great response there among my veggie-culture friends. What a world of bounty we have the privilege to live in, eh? So many healthy choices! Thanks again for reiterating that with your burger horn-of-plenty.
Thanks for all the ideas for vegetarian burgers. The recipes look delicious. This hub is a great resource for people like me who want to reduce or eliminate meat from their diet.
It is looking really great; I just love to eat them. Also veg burger is my favorite fast food.
These are amazing recepies and the best way to make the burger as i am vegeterian; I will definitely try them out. Thanks for sharing them with us.
Fossillady good for you! I went back and added a video on dangers of soy from Dr. Mercola's recent newsletter.
Thanks for visiting and commenting wooded, jennablur, parkersarah, abbiz.
very delicious HUB, LOL! Thanks Rmcrayne for sharing.
This is really delicious.. and healthy, I agree, jennablur. Thank you for the nice hub, rmcrayne!
Healthy and delicious! Love the idea :)
Love the choices of veggie burger recipies. Also, the information about soy has made an impact. I had switched to soymilk, but now I'm going to do my own investigation. Great Stuff
Good Hub. I love vegi burgers, now I have new ones to try.
Sunhawk thanks so much for responding! I really appreciate the tips. I think getting the right texture in the mixture and in the frying is key.
I wanted to clarify about the oats because the Blue Plate Diner uses cooked oats for their veggie burger. I might try my luck with walnuts. I used soaked walnuts with sweet pickle, purple onion and mayo for a mock tuna experiment and really liked it.
Either quick or natural steel-cut oats in a veggie burger is fine. The entire mix needs to be moistened to soften the oats and impart the nut flavor. The egg will transfer the flavor of the nuts throughout the mixture. If you don't want to use eggs in the mix, olive oil will also do the trick in moistening the mix. In fact, any oil will do the job.
Medium size patties are best; too thin and they fall apart. Experiment. I fry mine crispy in a cast iron frying pan over a medium heat. And peanut oil as a frying medium suits my taste. Slop mayo on a bun with a slice or two of tomato and shredded lettuce and chow down.
Whew! Hope I didn't leave anyone out.
Wow J Sunhawk! Thanks so much. Do you add dry quick oats? And do you make relatively thin patties and fry them crispy?
Thanks Humraaz. I saved the site to my favorites.
Thanks MKayo. I think the products like Morningstar have come a ways with decreasing the unrecognizable ingredients and excessive additives too. I still don’t like the idea of TVP though.
myster!ous it will be hard to pick just one!
Wow blackhatworld, what an excellent compliment!
Thanks deliz and lulubell. Enjoy!
Thanks pan.
ashleyyoung you should take a look at Trevor Justice’s website devoted to helping people transition! I went back and put a link to his website near the top of my hub. His site is the Vegetarian Health Institute.
Thanks so much kungfukid and eatingright.
Attention Getter, experience days, and Ingenira I hope you will stop back by and let me know if you try some of these.
BC always great to hear from you! This vegetarian cooking is new territory for me.
Thanks molson. I still like a good burger from time to time, but I believe embracing at least a 70% vegetarian is healthier for a lot of us.
o these look very good ! mostly the veggie one with the video ! I am a big cook myself and always willing to cook up new things ! thanks for the hub !! good job, and I'm glad your score is in the hight 90's !
"My advice to you if you are a meat eater, is not to expect hamburger taste or texture."
Not quite. Experiment with different mixes of nuts and oatmeal, in about 60-40 measurements, and the texture is very close to hamburger. (I use peanuts or walnuts.) Don't grind the nuts into powder. Grind them to about the size of peppercorns. Also add in diced onion and a tad of carrot - not too much carrot as it overwhelms the subtle nut taste you want to come through. Throw in sage, salt and pepper to taste. Add appropriate number of eggs to just moisten the mixture. Refrigerate overnight. Fry in peanut oil and your veggie burger will almost Moo!
Those look like some good healthy burgers
Look up vegetarian recipes on Manjula's kitchen (google it). My favorite veggie burger is Vada Pau - sold on practically every eatery in Mumbai.
Wow - a truly extensive Hub - You have really done your homework on this subject. I love the morningstar farms products and I have to say the quality and taste of these types of foods has really come a long way in the past few years. Great work on this Hub - I learned a lot - THANKS!
Thanks, great recipes..i can see myself eating a lot of good burgers this winter :)
Hi:
I voted your hub up and said was awesome. I also followed. One of the best Hubs I have ever had the pleasure to see.
Thanks
Fantastic hub! Your various alternative recipes will surely help me with my vegan transition. Would love to read more and learn more from you! :)
Excellent list to give me a good overview. I am tempted to try some of the recipes. :)
Wow, never even thought of making my own veggie burgers, i've lways just bought frozen ones from the supermarket, but i'll be giving some of these bad boys a try!
thanks for a great hub
Love the recipes. Lentil Burgers are my favorite. Great hub.
excellent list of cool recipes. I'm a huge list maker, this is a good one, I know a good list when I see one.
Love this hub! Perfect for me and my husband as we are vegetarians and I swear, I have never seen this many recipes in one place for vegetarian burgers! We normally do fried Portobello mushrooms with cheese on top and fried cashews on top of that - yummy - but these will get our creative juices flowing!
Number 1 hub, but hey ya always were a great cook !
i wish more people would give veggie burgers a try. i honestly believe that a veggie burger can be wayy better than a regular beef burger. thanks for the hub!
Thanks for your comments jcales, Rachel, and rmills. I hope you have good luck with your burgers!
PZigney I’ve been thinking that I really want to try a “restaurant” Portobello burger. Glad to hear you find them to be a treat.
Allanknowhow I do agree that “thinking healthy” is important. I believe it’s hard for the body to heal itself if your “head game” is not there.
I love hamburgers. Great hub lots of good content keep up the good work.
That is really great,i cnt help to make one for dinner, waiting for your new recipes. Thanks for sharing
definitely recipes I can use. I've only had the black bean and soy burgers. I never knew of lentil or carrot nut burgers.
Thanks
I enjoy reading this page, very infomative on Veg Diet. Thank you...!
Being say so, i belief eating healthy is one thing. Think healthy is also important, do you think so? Have a nice day, Cheers...! (^ ^)
I'm not in any sense of the word vegan but I have to say that there is this one restaurant that serves vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian food but they serve the Grilled Veggie Portobello Mushroom Burgers that you mentioned and, honestly, that's the only thing I order at that restaurant. Those burgers are delicious.
I agree erthfrend! Too many suspicious ingredients. Also too much soy, which Sally Fallon cautions against, especially TVP.
Thanks LisaHW. I'm glad you shared your preferences. Interesting about Gardenburger. I tried some from Costco, which were much more reasonably priced than Morningstar, and seemed to have fewer additives. I didn't have any unpleasant symptoms.
I NEVER microwave anything anymore. It changes the structure of food. Microwaving may cause harmful mutations. Also is thought to deplete nutritional value of food. If you surveyed naturopaths, I'd guess all of them recommend to retire your microwave.
Thanks joe w bennett, kc2dpt and creativelycc. Let me know if you try some of the burgers. Send pictures and I'll add them!
Thanks Money Glitch. It's always pretty cool to have a hub appreciated, but especially when it was a lot of research and work.
Thanks for visiting Christianadam and clipper99. HOWEVER, hub comments are not for self promotion.
Thanks for visiting and commenting edmondpogi, PR_am, nikitha, map65, mecheil, and triosol.
Great hub and very tasty recipes! I'm going to try adding tofu to my lentil burgers, I bet it makes them softer.
Thank you for these recipes! I am a vegetarian and I don't like buying some of the processed veggie burgers because of the preservatives so Im definitely going to try some of these yummy looking recipes!
I bookmarked this. Thanks. I've always pretty much stuck with Boca, Morning Star, and Gardenburger. I like the taste of Gardenburger, but a friend of mine agrees with me that it can leave one kind of indigestion that neither of even recognized (because it mimicked heart attack symptoms LOL). Boca's all American Burger with mushrooms is my favorite these days. I find that Morning Star products are much better lightly cooked in a sprayed skillet, compared to using the microwave.
Awesome. I'm always looking for new vegi burger recipes to add to my repertoire. My wife (the vegan in the household) will be thrilled.
This is useful resources for veg burgers. I am loving it.
helpful info! and it's making me starve...
these look like wonderful recipes...will try one tonight! Thanks for a great and healthful Hub!

Thanks for visiting again Medical Writer.
Thanks RoseGarden. Glad to have inspired you.
Thanks so much froggy. I really want to try the Ancient Grain burger, but it's a lot of ingredients.
Great little hub! I appreciate the list and can't figure out which I want to try first! Thanks for doing the legwork and putting this together.
Absolutely mouth-watering recipes. Have always wanted to try out veg burgers and yr hub is a very useful resource. Thanks.
Brilliant, vegetarianism is the way to go.
Thanks for the visit M.T. Dremer. One of the recipes calls for millet and quinoa. These grains, as well as amaranth and buckwheat are very high in protein. Read more in my Body Ecology Diet hub on grains.
I hear ya Maryanne. I love a good burger from time to time. I really miss the beef texture when having a veggie burger. That's why I said, don't expect a hamburger, just think of a veggie burger as a different and interesting sandwich.
Thanks for the high praise Babypushchairs, Martin90, lender and legendindia!
Thanks for the visit and comment MarianG, Runway, Roni, tal g mel, thecash-code and Zannie. Enjoy the recipes!
Thank you for the list of veggie burgers!! As a vegetarian, this was very helpful! :)
That's a lot of veggie burgers. I'm a fan of both morningstar and boca brand burgers, but I've always wondered how veggie burgers were made from scratch. Apparently there are a lot of different ways to do it. I'm leaning towards the use of chick peas and beans. You definitely want stuff that is going to fill the protein gap, so I'm not opposed to tofu either. I'll have to show this hub to my wife since she is the true vegetarian. I love burgers in all forms.
OK, I did get one of these at a fancy restaurant, by accident. Someone else's order came to my table. It wasn't bad, but wow, missed that real been flavor, what can I say :)
Great Hub! This really so delicious I love it!

I doubt if there are any better Hubs around than this. Great information. You sure put allot of effort into you Hub. I followed and bookmarked this Hub. I also voted it up and said it was useful. Thanks so much for sharing. If you get a chance come on over and check out my Hub.
Bye
YUM! I've been a vegetarian for a decade now and am always looking for good recipes! Thanks!
Thanks Starglade. Exactly my intent- to provide an index of diverse veggie burger recipes, vs laying out the actual recipes in my hub.
Okay Medical Writer. True enough.
For those of us on low-GI eating plans, veggie burgers are a wonderful source of alternative protein. I personally LOVE them (my husband disagrees with my opinion most of the time, so I don't get them often!). Thank you for doing so much digging, researching, and organizing for this hub! I'll be checking back when I need quick information.
Some vegetarian burgers dont taste any good.
Thanks flowerpick. Mission accomplished!
i like this hub! you give me great ideas! thanks
girly girl, let me know how they come out if you try some of these.
Kamran, do you mean you're eating a meat burger now?! You're funny!
great hub. burger is my favourate fast food item. so it is really nice tips and recips. nice hub after watching above burger, i 'm going for eat burger.hahaha...nice hub
nice! It is great to have some options that contain no soy or corn (am very sensitive to both) Very cool, can't wait to try out some of these.
Thanks for the high praise prasetio! I have seen a mock tuna salad recipe with tempeh, but not burgers. I've also seen a recipe for "fried steak" that called for tempeh. I think the texture would be well suited. for burgers and steak.
Thanks for visiting Infonolan. I plan to eat limited tofu and tempeh, but stay away from TVP.
I love burger and you shown me different taste of burger. I like your recipes. I also found a burger like this and it sold in my country. With "tempe" as the base ingredients. It is also vegetarian burger. Tempe made by soybean. God work, my friend. I vote this Up.

Soy is in so much of our food these days. People underestimate what it is in. It is EXTREMELY difficult to find substantial vegetarian alternatives that are soy free. (I have heard of Quorn, they may be a go-er). I've never seen their products face-to-face. Unfortunately they're not suitable for individuals with Coeliac Disease, however we can cope as there is much we can eat that soy allergic/intolerant peeps out there can't ;)
Thanks for the visit and supportive comments 2besure, dali, and ethel.
What a great choice. I am not a lover of burgers but there must be one for in here somewhere
rmcrayne, thanks so much for these recipes. I am not a vegetarian, but have been looking for substitute for red meat! 2 Thumbs up! Pam
Always great to see you Paradise. I feel like we're "classmates". We started HP about the same time and, along with MOW, were in the same HubNuggets group.
Varenya thanks for the comment. Endorsements from Vegetarians mean a lot.
Thanks Simone. I was hoping this one would be info people would want to bookmark.
Thanks so much for your comment Sally! I'm thrilled my vision translated!
Princessa that's pretty cool that your daughter is leaning toward vegetarianism. You should look into the "Body Ecology grains": amaranth, buckwheat, millet and quinoa, because they are all very high in protein. Also consider using sea vegetables, like dulse powder in foods to boost the B vitamins and trace minerals. I covered sea vegs in a Body Ecology hub too.
Oh, I'm saving this one!!! Thanks, RM!
Thanks for sharing! As vegetarian, I appreciate greatly these recipes and I will try most of them, for sure!
Brilliant hub! I'll definitely be referring to this in the future!
Although I enjoy a veggie burger now and again, mostly when dining out, I never paid too much attention to ingredients. This excellent resource really opened my eyes to the huge range of ingredients that are possible.
I very much like the concept of this Hub. For anyone who wants to go scouting for veggie burger recipes, this is the place to start. Your work let me review 32 recipes for ingredients in the amount of time it would take to find and read through five or six on the net. Super!
This is an excellent resource for veg burgers. My daughter refuses to eat meat most of the time, she says she wants to be a vegetarian. This recipes will be fun to make toguether and nutritional for a growing child.
Thanks RM.
